I was supposed to go with Rich and his friend to Lake Tahoe for a day of skiing. At the time, I was a student at Sacramento State University, so I was unable to go because of the amount of homework I had that day. Around 5 PM that evening, Rich’s friend called to tell me that Rich had broken his back in a skiing accident and was airlifted to the hospital in Reno Nevada. I went to see him several times while he was on the Stryker frame bed. We talked, cried, and prayed together.
About six months after his accident Rich came to our church picnic and we later went out to dinner together that evening. He drove, using a hand gear. He was already becoming strong and independent. That was in 1977 and the last time I saw Rich. We continued to correspond by mail for about a year after that but then lost touch.
I am saddened to hear about his passing, but also grateful to know that he is now able to run and walk in the presence of Jesus.
